Tongue Piercing Aftercare

Aftercare for tongue and other oral piercings. Tongue piercings heal quickly but swell a lot in the first week. The most important step is the early downsize — the long starter barbell must be shortened once swelling drops so it stops hitting your teeth.

Healing timeline

  • Typically 4–6 weeks.
  • Downsize at 10–14 days, as soon as swelling is down — the starter bar is far too long for a healed tongue.
  • Minimum age: 18+ with valid ID.

Daily cleaning

  • Rinse with distilled water after anything you eat, drink, or smoke.
  • Use a non-alcoholic mouthwash no more than twice a day; over-rinsing irritates the tissue.
  • Brush normally with a soft brush, including gently around the barbell, and use a fresh toothbrush.

What to avoid

  • Avoid spicy, acidic, and hot foods and drinks for the first week; ice chips help swelling.
  • No smoking, vaping, alcohol, or oral contact while healing.
  • Don't click the barbell against your teeth.
  • Don't change the jewelry yourself during healing — book a jewelry change at the studio.

What to expect

  • Swelling peaks around day 2–4 and can make speaking and eating awkward; it settles within the first week.
  • A white or yellowish coating on the tongue around the bar is normal early on.
  • A piercing can feel healed on the outside before the inside has closed — keep cleaning for the full window.

When to get help

  • Get medical attention for spreading redness, red streaks, fever, thick yellow or green discharge, or heat and swelling that keeps increasing.
  • Come in for the downsize at 10–14 days; a long bar left in chips teeth and wears gums.

Questions

Tongue piercing aftercare FAQ

How long does a tongue piercing take to heal?

Typically 4–6 weeks — one of the fastest piercings — but only if the starter barbell is downsized at 10–14 days once the swelling drops.

What can I eat after a tongue piercing?

Cold and soft food for the first few days (ice chips, yogurt, smoothies), then bland non-spicy food for the first week. Rinse with water after everything.

Why does my tongue piercing need downsizing?

The starter bar is long to allow for swelling. Once the swelling is gone, that extra length knocks against your teeth and gums; the shorter bar protects them. Downsizing is free for piercings done at Baron Art.

Downsizing

For piercings performed at Baron Art, the downsizing service fee is waived — you only pay for the shorter jewelry and get 15% off replacement jewelry. Your piercer's instructions always take precedence over this guide.
